Eišiškės is one of the oldest settlements in Lithuania. The Annals of Lithuania mention that Eišiškės was founded by Mikšys, the son of the Samogitian Duke Mantvilas. In the 16th century, it was considered one of the most important towns of the GDL. The castle court was located here, and the sejmels of the nobility met here. The town had a church, a synagogue, a school, four streets, a town hall and a tavern. Most of the inhabitants were Jews, who lived here until World War II.
