EIŠIŠKĖS CASTLE SITE

A former 14th-15th century brick castle of Lithuania, which defended the eastern borders against enemies. It is believed to have belonged to Sudimantas, the father of Grand Duke Vytautas’s wife Ona, in the second half of the 14th century. In the 16th century, chroniclers mention Eišiškės Castle as one of the oldest Lithuanian castles. Its forms are associated with the tower-type defensive structures widely known in the 13th century in Volynė and the upper reaches of the Nemunas.
